The Kewpie® Collection from R. John Wright made its debut in 1999 at the New York International Toy Fair with an authentic fully-licensed 8" tall Klassic Kewpie! Inspired by the early bisque Kewpie figurines produced in Germany beginning in 1912, this represented the first time that Rose O'Neill's delightful impish character was made in the medium of molded felt. Rose O'Neill had always envisioned her beloved Kewpie made out of cloth and the all-wool felt captures perfectly the warmth she was seeking.
Fully jointed for increased expressiveness, Klassic Kewpie® is the first RJW doll to be completely molded in metal molds - from the top of the topknot down to the tiny toes! Ingenious patterns were drafted so that a minimum of seams would intrude on the design. After molding, the features were delicately hand-painted and airbrushed and a hand-knotted forelock of the finest mohair was inserted into the scalp using a special 'ventilating' needle. On Kewpie's chest, the trademark red and gold paper shield reads "Kewpie RJW" and on the shoulders, the tiny blue wings identify this as an authentic Rose O'Neill Kewpie character. Klassic Kewpie® was made in an edition of 1000 pieces. Each came nestled in the finest ivory silk fabric in a deluxe custom-made hinged presentation case embellished in gold leaf with the R. John Wright Kewpie logo. Included is the numbered certificate of authenticity and the forms for owner registration.
Klassic Kewpie comes directly from R. John Wright Archives in pristine as-new condition.
